Bellavista is a city area of Santiago, located between north bank of Mapocho river and San Cristobal hill, with Pio Nono street as its backbone. In its beginning was a Catholic and aristocratic area, while today is a popular cultural center with several bars and international cuisine.

Bellavista highlights over others by its bohemian reputation and has a clear urban appeal, thanks to its unique architecture.

At night, Bellavista becomes one of  most visited both Santiago inhabitants and tourists alike. Entertainment  abundance makes it striking for all who want to spend a good evening. Options are so diverse that no one leaves unsatisfied. An excellent choice is Patio Bellavista, located on Constitucion street, where they converge restaurants, pubs and art shows of various kinds. But also, you can walk Pio Nono, Dardignac and Antonia Lopez de Bello streets, classic Bellavista places full of places to meet people and dance.

This neighborhood is divided between Providence (east) and Recoleta (west) municipalities, separated by Pio Nono street.

Its development started  in colonial era, where sector was known as La Chimba neighborhood, with poor families that lived on San Cristobal hill slopes. With Cal y Canto bridge construction some sectors are connected and from early nineteenth century urban development started.

You can reach via Metro de Santiago, Baquedano subway station. You must cross Pio Nono bridge at Mapocho River, heading north. In northeastern stands University of Chile Faculty of Law building, while in inorthwest is Campus Bellavista of University San Sebastian in the land which once formed part of the German Lyceum of the Missionaries of Divine Word.

Then comes Pio Nono street crossing Bellavista from south to north. Pio Nono street concentrates a lot of popular bars. Eastern sector of Bellavista are full of quality restaurants, especially at Dardignac and Constitucion streets.

How to get there

From Salvador subway station meters to northeast Salvador in Providencia avenue to Eliodoro Yanez avenue, turn left, continue by Arzobispo Mariano Casanova Bridge and turn left again on Santa Maria avenue.

There are also different transport services such as subway, city buses and cabs, last one work 24 hours.

Activities and attractions

Cultural heritage of this neighborhood has its greatest exponent in La Chascona museum, which belonged to Pablo Neruda poet. You will find, in turn, national importance theaters, such as San Gines, Teatro Bellavista and Centro Mori, among many others.

La Chascona was built in 1953, was the third property of Pablo Neruda and the only one in Santiago. Nearby San Cristobal hill, has three floors. In La Chascona, Pablo Neruda lived with his last wife, Matilde Urrutia. Today a museum, you can visit every day except mondays.

In east area of Bellavista, among Dardignac, Constitucion and Antonia Lopez de Bello are fine restaurants offering a varied cuisine. Also around Dardignac and Mallinkrodt street corner.

Pubs, clubs, restaurants and squares that await tourists to enjoy its charm, fun, live music and delicious dishes.

At end of  Pio Nono street is a funicular that almost reaches San Cristobal hill summit in Metropolitan park. From here you can follow on foot to reach virgin monument. Santiago Metropolitan park is formed around San Cristobal hill and adjacent land. Among its facilities are a recreation center, a nursery, forests and a highly visited zoo.
