Pichilemu means "grove" in Mapuche language, and was originally a village of natives who lived by fishing and collecting. Its origin as a spa dates back to 1885, when Mr Agustin Ross Edwards began construction of important architectural buildings, which is currently a heritage neighborhood of Pichilemu, highlighting the Agustin Ross Cultural Center and Ross Park, both declared National Monuments.

Due to its geographical characteristics, south coast of Santiago ends in steep cliffs and high presence of winds from Pacific ocean cause a strong surge that attracts those who enjoy streams. In fact, it is common see in its waters many fans and professionals with their surfboards, windsurf or kitesurf performing remarkable tricks.

Matanzas, located southwest from Navidad town and about 180 km from Santiago. Few houses and few inhabitants, except in summer, accompanying this peaceful cove has become fashionable with good cabins and camping options. Beauty  beaches or  Pupuya islet, reservoir of water birds, are some its attractions. Then there's the constant wind that allows windsurfing and kitesurfing. Even world champions have visited this town.

Returning to Pichilemu, which is located 135 km northwest of San Fernando, 207 km southwest of Santiago, is the best place in Chile to surfing. Nearby Punta de Lobos zone offers one of most famous waves in Chile and part of global giant waves circuit. But that's not all. There is a wide range of hotels and restaurants, highlighting seafood dishes. There are also routes to see how salt is produced in Cahuil town.

How to get there

By Car. From Santiago to Matanzas, on Autopista del Sol (78 route) to San Antonio, Leyda and then Leyda exit to Santo Domingo. Take the "carretera de la fruta" to Rapel and Navidad (2 hours).

From Santiago to Pichilemu, on 5 sur route to north entrance of San Fernando, follow O'Higgins Avenue and take I-50 route or "carretera del vino" in northwest to Santa Cruz, then to Marchihue town and Pichilemu (3 hours).

By Bus. Daily depart from San Borja terminal (Estacion Central subway station) to Navidad (3 hours).

Activities and attractions

The Agustin Ross park was created by Agustin Ross himself in 1885 and remodeled in December 1987 for 96th anniversary of town. Has large lawns, pool with lighting effects, highlighting their centennial palm. It was declared a National Monument in early 1988.

Bernardo O'Higgins square is in Infiernillo sector. It is an important green space for recreation Pichilemu.

Cahuil lagoon is located 13 Km south of Pichilemu, born from Nilahue river. Suitable for fishing, swimming and boating. It crosses by a bridge that follows route between Cahuil and Bucalemu, a typical village.

Nilahue freshwater beach is located 4 km south of Cahuil, where born a lagoon with same name. On its long path has beaches suitable for swimming, all with sand and beautiful scenery. Highlight El Montecillo, El Bronce and La Palmilla.

Las Terrazas beach has a great family turnout during summer. It is a must visit for tourists who visit Pichilemu. Next to city downtown, fishing cove and historical neighborhood.

The main beach is located opposite Ross Park, suitable for swimming, in addition to excellent conditions for surfing. It features large numbers of visitors, along with Las Terrazas beach.

Cahuil is a small village of fishermen located about 20 km south of Pichilemu. Since colonial times this area started salt production. This activity takes place along Cahuil lagoon with extraction techniques that have not changed for centuries.

The Salt Route includes typical  salt generation areas . This tour includes Cahuil, Barrancas, La Villa, El Bronce, La Palmilla and La Plaza sectors.
