This beautiful land are located in the regions of Los Lagos and Aysen, both considered the richest regions in lakes, rivers and mighty mountains and a host of beauties includes the called Chiloé Continental; the entire province of Palena (Hualaihue, Chaiten, Palena and Futaleufu), the commune of Cochamo and the provinces of Aysen, Captain Prat, Coyhaique and General Carrera.

Some areas of this zone are covered by ice fields and rain forest as the Valdivian forest and, with fewer species, the most austral Magellanic forest. It extends from the Reloncavi Sound to Southern Ice Fields. In it lies a narrow coastal plain, coastal mountains intensely affected by tectonic subsidence, and continental Patagonian mountains rivers and lakes, Patagonian glaciers of the Pacific island archipelagos, Patagonian mountains, islands and islets, all of which are bathed in sides by the Pacific Ocean.

The archipelagos, islands and islets are training two waterways systems for all types of ships: the Patagonian channels.

The Patagonian rivers are characterized by flash floods of Andean mountains and irregular courses. In the region of Los Lagos are Yelcho and Palena rivers, in the Aysen region are Cisnes, Aysen, Bravo, Pascua and Baker.

Currently this area has a total population of around 125,000 people in nearly 128,000 km2 of surface and is considered one of the least explored and most attractive in Chile due to its impenetrable forest and beautiful scenery.

The main economic activities of the Green Patagonia are fishing, farming and the export of seafood, livestock, forestry and tourism. However, compared to the rest of the country, is much lower due to the lack of population and also the abundance of natural forests and mountains unexploited.

One of the economic activities of faster growth in the Green Patagonia is tourism, thanks to its beautiful and pristine Patagonian landscapes. Most of the many natural attractions that have not been developed yet(Ice Fields and the Virgin Islands, etc). Another important attraction is its people, warm and friendly.

How to get there

From Santiago buses are available and flights to Puerto Montt, which is the starting point of this area and where you can find any kind of transport to Green Patagonia.

Activities

Views of the volcanoes Chaiten, Yates and Hornopiren, cerro Castillo, among several majestic heights, kayaking in estuaries, trekking in the mountains, fly and sport fishing are just some of the many wonders that this area offers.

In Coyhaique you can find the Regional Museum of Patagonia. It has samples of paleontology, archeology and anthropology regional geology and mineralogy and natural history. It also has pictures and samples of the elements used by immigrants from the region.

Through the broken geography of the Chilean Patagonia is possible Patagonian channels cruises from Puerto Montt, dodging islands, fjords, glaciers and watching the amazing nature of Patagonia.

Coyhaique

Coyhaique, Aysen capital, is a city that clearly differs from the rest of Chile: customs, landscapes, architecture and people, all seem have emerged from a postcard that still wait to be discovered.

The main feature of Coyhaique and Aysen is its varied landscapes that composes it. From shores filled of fjords and channels of Chilean Patagonia, to lush pampas closer to Los Andes.

Futaleufu & Pumalin

Futaleufu, that in Mapuche language means "great river", is located in middle of Los Andes and is a paradise for those who enjoy adventure sports and outdoor activities. Futaleufu River is considered one of the best in the world for kayaking and rafting.

If someone are looking for less demanding outdoor activities, can visit the Futaleufu National Reserve that protects two very important species in the area, such as Los Andes cypress and the huemul, deer endemic and native symbol of Chile.

Palena - Queulat

This basin includes Palena Valley and Queulat National Park and from Los Andes to Pacific Ocean, where it appears to fall between forests and fjords of Patagonia.

Town of La Junta is the cruxial point of Palena-Queulat Basin and it is a main place of business of north segment of Austral Highway. Here you can find different prices accommodations, restaurants, internet, gas, groceries and mobile phone signal.
